“There is a Catholic in me”,2 Bruce Springsteen stated to the Catholic magazine Famiglia Cristiana in 2013. Through Springsteen, the Vatican seemed to have finally found its way to rock and roll.3 In1985, the same Catholic magazine Famiglia Cristiana had already dedicated its cover to Springsteen’s epic first show in Italy (San Siro Stadium, Milan), with the title: “Who is scared of rock and roll?”4 The scare Famiglia Cristiana was mentioning was a too-rapid modernization which, since the mid-1950s, had been breaking traditional Italian political values. After World War II, in Italy as well as in the United States, this rapid modernization was embodied by rock and roll music.
