Man as an Exception to Nature in the Reflections of Alfred Russel Wallace
摘要
This paper deals with the subject of man in the thought of the Welsh naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace (1823–1913), who, together with Charles Darwin, discovered the theory of the origin of species through natural selection. By analysing some of Wallace’s works, I trace the stages of his gradual departure from Darwinian theory, which finds its greatest expression in the elaboration of a doctrine of the ‘exceptionality’ of man in comparison with other living beings.
