The Nigerian-American, award winning writer, lecturer and activist Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie was born in Enugu (Nigeria) in 1977. She is the fifth of six children and was raised in a middle-class Igbo family: her father was a professor of statistics at the University of Nigeria while her mother was the first female registrar. Under pressure from social and family expectations, Adichie enrolled in medical school in Nsukka, but dropped out after a year. Arguably as a self-determination gesture, she later moved to the U.S.A on a scholarship where she accomplished her multidisciplinary higher education and academic career.
