The three editors of this anthology speak from different personal, academic, cultural, and geographical positions. We are united by the search for answers to the crucial question of how design can not only contribute to fuelling globalized consumerism – in this it is unparalleled –, but also how it can use its very special competencies for the good of society. However, we do not title the book Society & Design, but rather deliberately Community (&) Design, because communities seem to be the instances and locations where design can be transformative. In these introductory reflections, each of us attempts to approach the concept of community and to define the role of design more precisely. We admit that we raise more questions than we provide answers.

摘要

The three editors of this anthology speak from different personal, academic, cultural, and geographical positions. We are united by the search for answers to the crucial question of how design can not only contribute to fuelling globalized consumerism – in this it is unparalleled –, but also how it can use its very special competencies for the good of society. However, we do not title the book Society & Design, but rather deliberately Community (&) Design, because communities seem to be the instances and locations where design can be transformative. In these introductory reflections, each of us attempts to approach the concept of community and to define the role of design more precisely. We admit that we raise more questions than we provide answers.
