The gaze that grasps the advent of meaning by letting it come forth is not an act, but an adhering-to, a latent or operative intentionality within Being itself. Thus Merleau-Ponty can say, indifferently, that my seeing unfolds from the midst of the visible, or from the midst of Being1. I don’t see Being from the depths of nothingness, my vision of Being not forming itself from elsewhere; Being no longer being before me, but surrounding me and in a sense traversing me.2
