The analysis of Merleau-Ponty’s “phenomenological” itinerary concludes with a questioning of the meaning of Being, which, by definition, must remain unfinished. Yet this point of arrival, that is, the theoretical gain implicit in the revision of Husserlian phenomenology, becomes – in turn – a new and more controversial beginning. For Merleau-Ponty, it involves returning to those very core ideas that had characterized his philosophical reflection up to that moment and putting into question not only their validity but also, and above all, the entire unity of sense. What operation did he intend to carry out? What external stimuli influenced his speculative itinerary? For what theoretical necessity did the French philosopher consider it indispensable to engage with Hegel of the Phenomenology of Spirit?
