I will now conclude by examining Hermann Schmitz’s phenomenological method. My guiding question is: Does his method meet his own neo-phenomenological requirements? The most crucial requirement is to provide a phenomenological explication of spontaneous and, as far as possible, authentic life experiences: “i. e. what really happens to people in a felt manner without them having intentionally constructed it. Spontaneous life experience is the ultimate yardstick for the justification of assertions” (Schmitz 2019, 48). With the phrase “what really happens to people in a felt manner,” Schmitz addresses another central point: what he calls “affective involvement.” Ultimately, this is the most decisive guarantee that something really affects me, that something is effective and real in this sense. Without “affective involvement,” there is no deeper sense of reality (cf. ibid. 62f.).
