Hermann Schmitz’ (1928-2021) is the founder of a “New Phenomenology”. One of the key notions of his New Phenomenology is – beside “felt-body”, “(own) bodily feeling or condition”, “affective involvement”, “holistic situations”, “quasi-things” – the notion of “atmospheres”. He defines “atmospheres” as “spatially extended, each time outpoured without boundaries, bodily perceptible emotions” (Schmitz 1995, 6f., 196-199, 292-296). For Schmitz “atmospheres, among them weather and silence (as experienced, not as constructed), [… are] mainly [...] emotions that have to be regarded as spatially effused powers able to affect the body” (Schmitz 2002, 492). Elsewhere, Schmitz says: “feelings are spatially effused atmospheres and forces that grasp us felt-bodily” (Schmitz 2023, 45).
