This chapter, along with the next, is entirely based on data collected during fieldworks conducted in Tanzania on farmers and wage labourers involved in the new global horticultural value chains. This chapter primarily addresses farmers. Fieldwork was conducted in the northern highlands of Meru (Arusha Region), Moshi Rural (Kilimanjaro Region), and Lushoto (Tanga Region)—the main hubs of smallholder CF for export-oriented horticultural crops. In total, I visited 14 mountain villages with smallholder groups in the highlands of Kilimanjaro, Meru, and Lushoto, and 7 large lowland farms managed by individual farmers along the Arusha–Moshi Road.
