Since the second half of the 1990s, a new form of citizen organization has gradually emerged, aimed at demanding greater involvement in decisions concerning research and innovation processes (Bucchi, 2006). In this context, Citizen Science has evolved into a structured and varied set of participatory levels. From an STS perspective, these levels highlight the intrinsic complexity of interactions between different social actors, outlining an alternative orientation that favors a top-down approach within innovation processes (Arnaldi et al., 2023). This participatory paradigm involves the involvement of “citizen scientists” in multiple forms and degrees of participation, supported by a wide range of tools, devices and applications useful for data collection and analysis. In particular, advances and the growing spread of digital technologies have been identified as key factors in expanding the scope of Citizen Science projects and increasing the overall number of participants (Wynn, 2017; Haklay, 2015, 2012).
