In nineteenth-century Italy, there was a combination of narratives and conceptions of nature originating from very different natural and social environments, different places, and different people. Yet, previous chapters have highlighted some recurring traits. This chapter continues the analysis of the conceptions of nature associated with the study of plants seen in Chapters 2 and 4 and aims to show the relationship between botany and the process of nation-building from the perspective of a range of experiences associated with nature, as in the previous chapter.
