Beyond Binaries and Clichés
摘要
Over the last sixty years, Agnès Varda has produced an eclectic and hard to categorise body of works which include advertisements, TV documentaries, experimental essays, feature films, and art installations. Critics and scholars have struggled to find a comprehensive way to discuss her work, which straddles very different eras and genres. Whether by choice or obligation, Varda was never an individual to choose the status quo or to go for the easiest option. She embraced constraints and found creative ways to share her vision even in commissioned shorts like Du Côté de la côte (1958) or Une Minute pour une image (1982). A bold and unapologetic experimenter, her cinematographic and artistic practice was fed by years of observing others, taking photos, and exchanging with all the people she met while travelling and working.
