As this book goes to print, the exhibition Le Paris d’Agnès Varda, de-ci, de-là opens at the Musée Carnavalet in Paris. It is the second major exhibition that her city — «They used to say “monter à Paris” as if France were vertical» — has dedicated to her since her passing in March 2019. Varda first arrived in Paris in 1943 with her family, fleeing Sète (though she was born in 1928 in Ixelles, Belgium). This time, the focus is particularly on Paris and photography: an ever-present subject, from Cléo from 5 to 7 (1962, entirely rive gauche, beginning on Rue de Rivoli and ending at La Salpêtrière) to Le lion volatil (2003, Place Denfert-Rocherau)1, and a form of expression that Varda turned to professionally as early as 1947, working as a reporter with a Rolleiflex, following Jean Vilar between the Avignon Festival and the Théâtre National Populaire (until 1961)2.
