The relationship between knowledge and society, and more specifically between knowledge and economy, has received growing attention from scholars during the last century. Among other consequences, this resulted in the birth of new disciplines, such as the sociology of knowledge and social history of knowledge1, as well as knowledge management. However, another effect of the growing awareness concerning the important role of knowledge in society and economy has been the development of a wide debate about what has been variously called post-industrial society2, information society and information economy3, knowledge society and knowledge economy4.
