One way to put it is like this: equanimity amounts to a series of positionless positions realizable as natural, conscious, and dynamic relationships to the moving world that fit themselves to situations as they appear and disappear. Intentionality, serving the stability of patterned, rule-governed features of personality and behavior, is ill suited to a shifting world that constantly approaches and withdraws. No sooner is equanimity admitted in a single instance than the world again impinges itself—positively, negatively, or neutrally—and so delicate balancing and rebalancing acts may begin again, without the imperative to do so. In its mutable responsiveness to the world, equanimity is like playing with a kaleidoscope where order collapses into an exciting new one with each turn. Approaching the cognizable world equanimously without giving priority to process over form and change over stasis is not possible. Nevertheless, genuine attunement to the changeful world means moments will arise when equanimous rebalancing becomes temporarily suspended or paused, when, for example, it gets subordinated in the immediacy of urgent situations such as standing against injustice or contesting abuses of power.
