In 2022, a drama entitled “Japan Sinks” aired on TBS in Japan. It was a remake of a popular science fiction novel by Komatsu Sakyō from 1973 that has also been adapted into a movie. The original story depicts Japan sinking into the ocean as a result of massive earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. The remake follows a similar plot, but with the addition of a new energy source being mined from the seabed, located in the gaps of an underwater rock formation 9,000 meters below sea level, for the purpose of reducing carbon dioxide emissions and mitigating global warming. However, this mining activity causes an imbalance in the seabed plates, ultimately leading to the sinking of Japan.
