It was a general belief in medieval Japan that the world had entered mappō (末法, the latter days of the Law) in 1052.2 To the aristocratic elite, this catastrophic decline would have been even more apparent with the rise of musha no yo (武者の世, the age of the warrior), as pointed out by the contemporaneous historian, Jien (慈円, 1155-1225).3
