In the linguistic expression of weather, Romance languages show a strong preference for impersonal syntax (e.g. weather verbs, existential constructions, etc.), in line with the thetic nature of weather utterances. This paper provides an empirical analysis of the morpho-syntactic structures in a highly specific corpus based on a representative selection of specialized technical synoptic reports from national weather agencies in French, Italian and Spanish. Contrary to all expectations, our study reveals an extremely low frequency, or even complete absence, of impersonal structures in the weather reports of these three Romance languages, which privilege other types of existential utterances, such as verbless sentences or structures with subject inversion, alongside clearly categorical structures such as attributives. Indeed, in weather reports, there is an inherent conflict between theticity and categoricity. From a semantic point of view, the profoundly evanescent nature of atmospheric conditions inevitably steers weather utterances towards an existential interpretation. However, the information status of weather phenomena as topical or derived themes in this highly formulaic textual genre makes prototypical existential constructions (cf. il y a / hay / c’è), whose discursive-textual function is precisely the introduction of new referents, fundamentally unsuited for this type of text. Although the pragmatico-discursive constraints are the same in weather reports in the three languages under study, they clearly differ in terms of the preferred syntactic structures. Italian and Spanish make extensive use of nominal and adjectival verbless statements, and to a lesser extent of subject inversion, whereas French almost exclusively uses complete sentences with a preverbal subject. These differences could be explained, among other things, by microtypological characteristics of these three closely related languages with respect to nominal determination and word order.

摘要
