As a starting point for the development of a computer assisted subtitling tool within the COMPASS project (see section 1.1.1), one of the objectives was to gain insights into the current subtitling processes at our project partner ZDF Digital. Therefore, one of the first steps was the design of a study to investigate the usability of the subtitling tool being used at the time, and to gain insights into subtitlers’ attention distribution during the task. The study design was partially guided by a previous study by Orrego-Carmona et al. (2018) as well as the existing subtitling conditions at ZDF Digital. With their own subtitling department at the time consisting of four fulltime subtitlers in charge of Quality Control (QC) and a varying number of working students trained in intralingual subtitling who prepare most of the subtitles, ZDF Digital provided both the material and participants for this study.

摘要
