As we have aimed to show thus far in this analysis, the figure of the flâneur— historically a leisure observer of urban modernity—has undergone a radical transformation. Through the novels explored in this study, it becomes clear that flânerie in post-9/11 American fiction, or practices of flânerie that echo some conventions of its traditional iteration, no longer represent a position of detachment or aesthetic distance; instead, they often signal a form of anxious immersion, existential drift, and critical witnessing. Each of the narratives examined has revealed flâneurs who are unmoored, surveilled, complicit, and most importantly, overwhelmed by the very urban landscape they traverse. However, this reconfigured flânerie offers a diagnostic lens for understanding the psychic and spatial dislocations of the post-9/11 American city, both in the aftermath and in the shadow of the catastrophe.
