Explicitness

The present chapter will deal with explicitness and explicitation, a phenomenon which should not be underestimated in linguistic simplification. While many linguistic features141 contribute to a tendency towards implicitness or explicitness, as briefly shown in Section 10.1.1, this chapter will focus on two aspects: explicitation in providing explanations of terms (but also synonyms, hypernyms, etc.) in the translated subcorpora, and implicit or explicit subordinate clause use. Explicit clauses are those with a finite mood, an explicitly mentioned subject and a marked tense, while implicit clauses have a non-finite mood (cf. for instance Treccani n.d.b).
