The increasing acceptance of linguistic diversity in professional settings provides an opportunity to leverage the expansive affordances of multilingualism in a globalized world. However, one of the hindrances to achieving such goal is represented by a conceptualization of multilingualism limited to national standard varieties of languages. This ideological perspective on multilingualism can be defined as monoglossia, a term to be contrasted with heteroglossia, the latter used to describe the repertoire of different voices (i.e., mixed linguistic resources) that speakers acquire as part of their multilingual experiences. In the present paper, I address the transformative potential of translanguaging applied to professional settings to attain not simply communicative efficiency, but to also address social affordances such as identity construction, identity development, and the strengthening of social interactions. I will describe examples of the benefit of promoting an open mind towards the use of mixed linguistic resources in professional environments.

摘要
