This paper is a version of a lecture I gave on Carlos Fuentes in the context of a series on “Border Temporalities: Doing Literature in a World of Walls,” on the kind and generous invitation of Susanne Klengel whose remarkable career as a Latin Americanist we are celebrating in this publication. Since mine was one of the initial lectures of the series, I thought it might be appropriate to offer an overview of the topic in the narrative fiction by Fuentes, a pioneer in the literary exploration of the border in the case of Latin America, given that his earliest novels addressed the US-Mexican border, and that he returned to this issue throughout his career as a writer of narrative fiction.
