Just as it happens with many, indeed all things in the world, that they are as easily praised by one person as despised by another, as the common adage truly says: laudatur ab his, culpatur ab illis [praised by some, blamed by others]:2 such perforce is also the fate that dance—implanted in nature by God, and practiced since the beginning of the world by all peoples, Jews, heathen, and Christians alike, and in all times—must suffer. For in all times and places and in all classes of people it has been found that some, on account of the visible adroitness [i: and courtesy], salubrious physical motion, delight of the mind, and additional other benefits that arise from it arising therefrom, praise it to the Heavens, and trace its origin to the stars, even to the gods, and therefore have called it Exercitium divinum et mysticum [a divine and mystical exercise].3
