A man who would attain the appearance of perfection, and successfully con-form to the mode of living appropriate to these times, must enroll himself in the schools of two teachers, namely: intellect and virtue.1 For just as the intel-lect waxes in direct proportion to the years spent in the pursuit of studies, so too will virtue be greatly supported through the praiseworthy practice of phys-ical exercises. And therefore that intelligent Italian reasoned not unwisely on this point when he had incised on a garden wall in Naples the following words concerning physical exercises: Physical activity is the maintenance of human life; the increase of bodily warmth; a spur to a lazy and sleepy character; the enhancement of innate strength; the withering of all superfluous humors; an enemy of sloth; a profitable use of time; the duty of youth and the friend of old age.

摘要
