Aspectuality of verbal nouns in Ukrainian
摘要
The grammatical status of Ukrainian verbal nouns is a subject of debate in scholarly literature and, indirectly, in lexicographic practice. Indeed, even a brief review of how verbal nouns are presented in bilingual and explanatory dictionaries of the Ukrainian language over the past few decades raises questions, as it reveals significant discrepancies in their interpretation. For example, in a number of Russian–Ukrainian dictionaries, a single Russian verbal noun is translated by at least one pair of Ukrainian verbal equivalents (and in some entries — by several pairs). At the same time, Ukrainian verbal nouns ending in -ння are, as a rule, accompanied by a clarification indicating that they express an uncompleted or ongoing action: “ИЗМЕНЕНИЕ. Зміна ‘change’; (imperf. action – also) змінювання, змінення” (РУС 1988, vol. 1: 584; РУСНТ 1994: 157; РУС 2003: 340).
