Early Judaism did not concern itself much with mysticism. The Bible hardly ever discusses the afterlife, and other than the miracles performed by God or his special messengers, it does not show much interest in supernatural beings and phenomena. A race called the Giants is indeed described as the offspring of the sons of ANGELs and the daughters of men. However, the giants were flesh and blood and could be founders of nations or experience being conquered in battle. The angels appear as messengers with little dwelling on their paranormal attributes. However, over the centuries, the thoughts of many sages turned to the mystery of life, death, and beyond. The immense, baffling world that humans had not even begun to understand was slowly filled with creatures and phenomena that begged for explanations. Moreover, despite the Second Commandment, many of them were represented visually.
