Due to the rapid advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its increasingly easy accessibility – even for people without programming skills – AI-based tools are being used in more and more specialist areas. The field of communication for specific purposes is also affected by this development. This article examines the impact of AI on practical terminology work, particularly in an institutional setting. The exploratory study is based on qualitative expert interviews and analyses which steps in terminology work can be supported by AI and to what extent AI is already integrated into the terminology workflow. It also examines how the use of such technologies affects the roles and competence requirements of terminology experts.
