The end of the narrative of progress

All evolutionary progress in the universe has required structural conservatism as a stability concept. Even in the seemingly uneventful phases of history, evolution occurred as a constant process of trial and error. But only what proved itself became tradition. Conservatism thus reveals itself as the enabler of progress, not as a reactionary resistance to it.
