The progressive potential of language as a form of encoding lies in its ability to store and transport large amounts of information. More significant, however, is its function in encoded space: it gives structure to materialized collective intelligence. Texts on religion, medicine, astronomy, philosophy, mathematics, technology, and literature serve as maps of the world and are sites where complexity develops.
