Harnessing the power of grasslands in mixed farming/crop-livestock systems

The demand for food is projected to double in the coming decades, driven by rapid population growth, urbanization, and rising incomes, factors that place enormous pressure on global agricultural systems (Elferink & Schierhorn, 2016). In response, a range of agricultural policies have been implemented to boost food production and enhance food security (Godfray et al., 2010; Poppy et al., 2014). However, the competition for land and resources for agriculture is expected to intensify signifcantly by 2050 (Alexandratos & Bruinsma, 2012), a challenge further compounded by the impact of climate change (Lynch et al., 2021). Unfortunately, many policy-driven strategies have promoted the specialization and intensifcation of farming, resulting in more simplifed and high-input systems. These often involve the decoupling of crop and livestock production and the emergence of homogenized agricultural landscapes. Moreover, such systems typically rely heavily on external inputs, such as synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, which contributes to environmental pollution, degrade water and air quality, disrupt ecosystems, and pose risks to human health through potential contamination of food products.
