Securing sufficient, healthy, and affordable food for the world’s growing population is crucial to ensure the fair and peaceful development of humanity. From the inception of agriculture to the present, farmers and growers have continuously struggled to protect crops (and livestock) from various threats. It is well known that the yield and quality of crop production are greatly influenced, both negatively and positively, by abiotic factors (i.e. related to physical and chemical variables, such as soil and air temperature, soil water content, nutrient availability, light intensity, and spectral composition, etc.) and by biotic factors (i.e. related to other organisms living in the environment where crop plants grow).
