Throughout the world, sheep production systems are dependent on pasture and forage, but vary widely, from intensive dairy and meat production to traditional pastoralism (Economides, 1983; Jones, 2004; Morris, 2017). Intensive production systems may involve significant periods of indoor housing of flocks, during which time animals are fed grain-based and other concentrate feedstuffs to improve weight gain or to optimize milk production (de Rancourt et al., 2006; Thompson, 2009; Rancourt and Carrère, 2011; Pulina et al., 2018). Intensive sheep production systems also often involve pastures that are seeded and managed for the purpose of forage production, in contrast to native pastures or rangelands used for traditional pastoralism. These systems may be characterized by intensive management including control of grazing, use of fertilizers (either natural or manufactured), and, in some cases, insect and disease management to protect vegetation.

摘要
