Sheep breeds have been bred to survive across a variety of environments, from harsh hill conditions in northern Europe to the dry regions of Africa and Asia. Recent estimates record global sheep numbers of more than 1.2 billion (FAO, 2024a). Sheep production has played an important role across the world, providing social, economic, and cultural benefits. However, animal agricultural systems are coming under increasing pressure due to its impacts on the environment, in particular, its contribution to climate change, and resulting implications for sustainability.
