On poultry farms, poultry litter is a mixture of feathers, dead birds, broken eggs, waste feed, and bedding materials. The U.S. poultry industry is characterized by its high production system. Over 65 billion pounds of live weight broilers and turkeys were produced in 2022 (USDA, 2023). Poultry litter accumulates continuously throughout the poultry life cycle, resulting in the ongoing production of substantial quantities of poultry litter. Taking Maryland’s Eastern Shore as an example, nearly 550 000 tons of poultry litter were produced each year (Tidwell, 2012). The large-scale production of poultry litter highlights the importance of efficient management and the potential benefits of using poultry litter as a source of plant nutrients. Treated or untreated poultry litter is a low-cost, highly nutritious source of phosphorus and nitrogen that may be utilized as an organic soil fertilizer and organic amendment to boost crop yields and improve soil fertility (Gascho et al., 2006; Harmel et al., 2008). Its organic composition not only adds soil fertility but also provides beneficial microbial activity in the rhizosphere, thereby promoting sustainable agricultural practices and crop yields. Application of poultry litter can contribute to significantly higher yields with cotton, corn, soybeans, peanuts, and other crops (Lin et al., 2018).
