Advances in the use of biocontrol agents to control diseases in potatoes

The potato, globally recognized as the third most important food crop for human consumption after rice and wheat, reached a production of over 380 million tons in 2020 (FAO, 2020, 2024; Johnson, 2008; Love et al., 2020). Being an underground tuber, the potato faces threats from a spectrum of diseases throughout its entire growth period, including foliar diseases such as late blight, which caused Irish Potato Famine, early blight, gray mold, white mold, blackleg, and soilborne diseases such as soft rot, Fusarium wilt, nematodes, and powdery scab (Akino et al., 2014; Ge et al., 2021; Hao et al., 2009; Johnson, 2008; Love et al., 2020; Perry et al., 1998; Ristaino, 2002). Most of these diseases can cause significant yield losses and impact the quality of the harvested crop. Besides direct losses, potato diseases can also lead to indirect losses due to reduced marketability, increased costs associated with disease management, and potential impacts on food security (Maas, 1975)
