However, climate change threatens production of the quantities of food required to feed this growing population, leading to increased food insecurity (Kousar et al., 2021). It is estimated that approximately 500 million people, especially in Africa and Asia, are suffering from malnutrition (Kogan et al., 2019). Insects present a suitable alternative food source that can alleviate increasing food insecurity, given advantages such as nutrient profile, availability, low production cost and reduced vulnerability to climate change (van Huis et al., 2013).
