The global population is increasing rapidly, and with it comes a growing demand for food, particularly protein sources. The aquaculture industry, which provides fish for human consumption, is expanding to meet this demand. The FAO defines aquaculture as the ‘farming of aquatic organisms, including fish, molluscs, crustaceans, and aquatic plants’. Among the aquaculture aims, the one performed for the human consumption purposes is of utmost importance in providing food, income, and guarantying food security for several communities around the world (FAO, 2022). Since the year 1980, the sector increased at a pace of over 7.5% per year (FAO, 2022). In the period 2010– 2020, the production of aquatic animals went from 59.9 to 87.5 million tons, and following the increasing demand of the growing population, the sector is in continuous expansion. Aquaculture is seen as a powerful means of meeting the world's growing demand for protein (Boyd et al., 2022).
