Dairy farming has played an important role in many countries over many centuries under a wide range of circumstances. In some countries, the availability of grasslands was a key driver for farming with ruminants whereas, in other situations, the shift from cheap grain imports for food to cheap grain imports for animal feed was a major factor in expanding and intensifying animal production. After the Second World War, dairy farming in Europe gradually became part of a rapidly changing agricultural sector with a strong focus on increasing food production to combat hunger caused by wartime conditions.
