The use of plant bio-active compounds and other alternative therapeutic strategies in organic dairy farming
摘要
Organic farmers are encouraged to use natural methods such as minerals, homeopathy and phytotherapy to keep animals healthy (definitions of key terms in the chapter are shown in Table 1). In the case of herbs and medicinal plants, this might be, at least partly, based on animal self-medication, which is known for several animal species including ruminants (Provenza, 2018; Villalba and Provenza, 2007; Villalba et al., 2009). This behaviour is possible as long as ruminants have access to meadows with a high biodiversity of phytochemical rich herbs from which to choose in supporting their health. However, this subject is not covered by this chapter.
