On a continuum of human influence on ecosystems (Lesslie and Taylor, 1985; McIntyre and Hobbs, 1999), rewilding refers to the decisions implemented to produce any shift in an ecosystem from an anthropogenically modified state, towards total wilderness, where non-anthropogenic processes dominate (Carver, 2014; Carver et al., 2021; Gordon et al., 2021) (Fig. 1).
