Enhancing Interfaces and Content

This chapter examines how interface and content design can reduce digital skill barriers and support more inclusive participation in internet and connected intelligent media. It argues that designers play a crucial role in addressing digital inequality, as poorly designed systems can make even routine tasks difficult, especially for users with limited operational, formal, information, communication, content creation, or strategic media use skills. The chapter highlights the importance of accessible, user- and human-centered design, including simplified navigation, clear feedback, contextual guidance, progressive disclosure, personalization, and transparent AI systems. It also shows how designers can improve online content by supporting problem definition, source selection, query formulation, information evaluation, responsible communication, ethical content creation, and reflective decision-making. The chapter concludes that inclusive design, explainable AI, and transparent decision-support systems are essential complements to education and training, helping users maintain autonomy, trust, and agency in increasingly complex digital environments.
