The Politicization of Abortion
摘要
Since Roe v. Wade established a right to abortion for women in the United States in 1973, the issue of the “right” to abortion services and the availability of access to such services has been a political issue. Opponents of abortion services have unremittingly sought to limit the availability of services to terminate a pregnancy. This issue is “tied up” with some religious and cultural beliefs and taboos that make this subject an issue of political contention. Most women’s rights organizations are supportive of a woman’s right to terminate a pregnancy. The opponents of abortion choice are also organized and have effectively limited women’s access to abortion services. They reached their ultimate success in the Supreme Court’s 2022 Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization decision. This case overturned the decision of Roe v. Wade and eliminated the idea that there is an implied right to privacy in the Constitution and with that, that abortion is a protected right. It also significantly changed women’s reproductive health care rights, by eliminating the idea that a woman’s health was paramount to that of the fetus or even fetal tissue. This followed a number of political maneuvers by the Republican Majority Leader in the U.S. Senate which resulted in “packing” the court with opponents of Roe (Dias & Lerer, 2024; Wegman, 2024).
