The Role of Politics in Influencing the Women’s Health Agenda
摘要
The role of women in American politics, especially local politics, has changed dramatically in the past five decades. American women have increasingly been elected to public office. This participatory pattern is apparent in all political venues but is especially apparent in local politics. Despite some dramatic changes in women’s participation in politics and in leadership roles, women, who make up 52% of the American population, do not hold more than half of all political offices in the United States. Nevertheless, women have become important players in American politics, and there are women who hold leadership positions in which they have power to affect changes in public policies. Sometimes this power is used to elevate women’s interests with respect to the well-being of women and children. At other times, as we will discuss in Chapters 4 and 5 , it has been used by organized political movements in ways that have had negative consequences for women’s well-being. Nevertheless, according to numerous studies of women in leadership positions, women tend to be more sensitive to the needs of women and children and to advocate for such needs with greater effectiveness (Kristoff, 2024).
