Archaeological evidence suggests hunter-gatherers lived along Guatemala’s Pacific coast and in the highlands from least 6500 BC. Maize was being cultivated from around 3500 BC and by 2000 BC villages had been established in the Pacific lowlands and along the Antigua Valley. Monte Alto, close to Guatemala’s Pacific coast, became a centre of the region’s first complex culture from around 1500 BC. It featured giant stone sculptures, stelae and altars.
