Ager Vaticanus was the name given to a marshy area to the west of the city of Rome, close to the river Tiber. Uninhabited for much of Rome’s long history, the area was developed with villas and gardens during the 1st century, when the city expanded. At the peak of imperial power in the 2nd century, Rome’s population was estimated to have reached 1·6m.
