This chapter provides an in-depth empirical exploration of the far-reaching impact of the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown on internal migrant workers, specifically focusing on the reverse migrants of Ganjam, Odisha. It examines the socioeconomic disruptions faced by reverse migrant workers, especially in urban centres, where lockdowns led to sudden unemployment, food insecurity, and the cessation of essential services. The chapter investigates the pre-pandemic migration landscape, detailing the patterns of migration and occupations undertaken by workers in destination states. It also analyses the profound effects of the lockdown on their livelihoods, exploring how migrants were forced to return to their native places amidst overwhelming hardships. Through a field-based investigation, the chapter sheds light on the vulnerabilities faced by migrant workers, the systemic challenges in urban labour markets, and the role of state interventions in facilitating their reintegration. The chapter concludes with reflections on the urgent need for responsive policies to address the needs of reverse migrants.
