Víctor L. Urquidi (1919–2004)

Víctor L. Urquidi was a distinguished Mexican economist whose contributions have had a lasting influence on economic policy, academia, and environmental issues in Mexico. He made significant contributions to the Bank of Mexico, helping to shape national economic strategies, and played a pivotal academic role at El Colegio de México by fostering multidisciplinary research and institutional development. Furthermore, Urquidi was a pioneer in environmental policy, integrating economic, demographic, and urban perspectives within the field of environmental economics. He also played a leading role in bringing sustainable development, science, technology, education, and tax reform to the forefront of the national agenda. This chapter provides a concise overview of his life and work, identifying the most representative milestones of his career through an examination of some of his most influential writings, which established him as a key reference in Mexico.
