In Spinoza’s metaphysics Antonio Negri, whose writings have had a great influence on contemporary theories of cognitive capitalism, finds a new “materialism” for a post-1968 world: a materialism grounded in “constitutive ontology” at the center of which is the potentia of the multitude. Negri’s biomaterialism and its influence on contemporary theories of the “common” is analyzed in the chapter, which argues that the role of the “common” is to displace the class contradictions and class relations of capitalism as a strategy to invent a “new” capitalism in which “knowledge” and “subjectivity” and the “productive” power of “life” itself become the basis of value production. Which is another way of saying that the ultimate effect of the biomaterialist abandoning of the source of value in material production is the fashioning of a metaphysics for liberal (spiritual) capitalism.
