Professional Computer-Based Document Preparation

The RUNOFF system was an important milestone in using computers to process documents. While Saltzer’s RUNOFF was certainly not the first document preparation system, the “dot” commands were simple to use and efficient to implement on computers that counted memory in kilobytes. As a result, RUNOFF quickly became popular outside of MIT, including at Bell Labs.
